Digital passport photos
Use a sharp colour photo on a plain light background. Include your head, shoulders and upper body; the application handles cropping. Face the camera with a neutral expression and visible eyes. Keep other people, objects and shadows out.
Printed passport photos
The head must measure 29–34 mm from crown to chin. Use a plain cream or light grey background and professional-quality printing on white photographic paper without borders. Do not cut a photo from a larger image.
Children and babies
Children under six do not need a neutral expression or to look straight at the camera. Babies under one may have closed eyes. Supporting hands must stay out of the picture.

A preview is not an approval. Final acceptance is decided by the issuing authority.
Common questions
Can MULTIPASS issue a UK photo code?
No. MULTIPASS provides downloadable previews, not the photo codes issued by participating booths or shops.
Should I crop my digital photo first?
No. GOV.UK tells applicants using their own device to supply the wider original and let the application crop it.
